Description: On October 31 Greg Barker, Minister of State at DECC, made the controversial proposal to halve the feed-in tariff (FiT) rates for solar installations in each band up to 50kW, with smaller cuts in the bands from 50kW to 250kW. Since the announcement, many working in industry have prophesised that DECC has killed the industry dead.

But has it?

The continued saga and debate surrounding these changes shows just how it important it is for installation businesses across the country, to nurture the best networks and be aware of the most up-to-date information to ensure the industry continues to thrive in 2012 and beyond.

Solar Power UK will tour as a roadshow to six towns across the UK to present half day events.

Each session will discuss the real impact of the FiT cuts, the impending and possible EPC requirements, how the Green Deal will affect the PV installer, and how the UK solar industry can remain sustainable into 2012.

Who should attend?
MCS qualified installers, distributors, green deal assessors, end users and equipment vendors.

Each event will feature the following programme:

  • The Implementation of the Green Deal - Speaker to be announced
  • Analysing PV Pricing Models/How to Remain Competitive with the new FIT rates - Ray Noble, STA

EVENT: EBM-PAPST TO HIGHLIGHT THE ENERGY SAVING POTENTIAL OF EC AT DATA CENTRE WORLD 2012
Date: 29th February – 1st March 2012, Olympia, London, Stand: F54
ebm-papst, the manufacturer of high-efficiency fans and motors, will use Data Centre World 2012 to highlight how UK data centres could reduce the amount of energy consumed through cooling by, typically, 58%, simply by upgrading to EC technology.

With energy usage of national concern and the UK data centre industry already accounting for around 2% of national power consumption – a figure which is projected to grow – EC technology could have a significant impact on cutting energy consumption, reducing energy bills and decreasing the carbon emissions of the UK’s data centre sector.

Helen McHugh, head of sustainability at ebm-papst, said, “The power usage efficiency (PUE) rating is a critical method of assessing how effectively power is being used within a data centre. Our experience within the industry has revealed that a substantial number of existing data centres in the UK have a PUE in excess of 2.0, which is classed as average, with some older facilities classified as 2.5 (inefficient) or higher. Inefficient cooling technology may be a key reason why their PUE scores are so low.”

“We have recently embarked on a project with a leading UK mobile operator. During an initial trial, we were able to demonstrate an energy saving of 78% as a direct result of upgrading their CRAC units with EC technology. This highlights that the savings associated with upgrading to EC technology are tangible and not only reduce energy consumption and cut carbon emissions, but also positively impact on the bottom line in the long term.”

Event type: Data Centre World Conference and Expo covers all key aspects of managing a data centre including:
Cabling • Cloud Computing • Connectivity and Telecoms • Cooling • Data Centre Design and Build • IT Security and Physical Site Security • Operating Systems • Outsourcing • Power and Power Management • Servers and Hardware • Software and Applications • Storage • Virtualisation
Location: Olympia, London, Stand F54
Description: ebm-papst’s stand (F54) will demonstrate the core benefits of EC technology in comparison with AC, and experts from ebm-papst will be on-hand throughout the exhibition to discuss how ebm-papst can help to cut energy consumption in data centres across the UK.

EVENT: SCHNEIDER TRAINING COURSES
Date: Various
Event type: Energy efficient solutions, lighting technologies, wiring accessories, home networking and lighting control applications.
Location: Various
Description: Schneider Electric has added new topics to its training offering to include areas such as energy efficient solutions and the latest lighting technologies.

The events are held by Schneider Electric in partnership with its network of authorised distributors to highlight the extensive range of solutions available, which installers can capitalise on to boost the profitability of a project.

The free events are taking place at distributors’ branches and conference facilities across the country and as well as new topics, will focus on core product areas including wiring accessories, home networking and lighting control applications.

In addition, the training will advise installers about the latest cable management and circuit protection offers, which can reduce installation times, ensuring they meet project deadlines and helping end users save money.

At the events, attendees will also be able to share ideas and network with other contractors as well as have access to Schneider Electric’s team of technical and sales experts.

Hamish Bingley, customer marketing engineer from Schneider Electric comments: “The free events provide a great opportunity for contractors and electricians to keep abreast of the latest technologies, which is particularly important in the current competitive market.  One way they can add value to the service they offer customers is to play an advisory role, guiding them through the range of solutions available and making recommendations. Also, with energy efficiency so high on everyone’s agenda, there is plenty of scope to have an input on refurbishment as well as new build projects, helping customer to meet environmental obligations while lowering CO2 emissions and energy bills. ”

As an added bonus, attendees will also receive vouchers for 15 per cent off featured products and support literature to help in specifying the solutions.
