NAPIT have highlighted the importance of ensuring Local Authorities are up to date with the new and proposed policy changes that are set to be introduced in the near future, after attending the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health’s Housing and Health Conference.

The conference focussed on the forthcoming changes to HMO (Houses in Multiple Occupation) regulations, as well as the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, which was commissioned in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire and was awaiting publication at the time of the event. Speakers at the conference included Karen Buck MP, who recently sponsored a Bill in Parliament intended to update the Landlord and Tenant Act of 1985’s fitness for human habitation standards.

NAPIT’s stand at the event showcased the value of Local Authorities becoming corporate members of the organisation. This free membership allows authorities to access expert technical, legal and industry advice, and provides discounted rates for products and insurance policies. NAPIT also made Local Authorities aware of the training that was available for them, including guidance on how to interpret Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) and free training on basic electrical safety and Home Safety Guidance documents, which have been designed to provide an easy-to-understand guide to the overall safety of a property.

NAPIT’s Head of External Affairs, Charlotte Lee, said “It was great to be able to meet so many Local Authorities at the conference, and to explain to them the benefits of becoming corporate members of NAPIT. A number of upcoming policy changes will directly affect Local Authorities, including the forthcoming broadening of HMO legislation to include more properties under the definition of an HMO, and Karen Buck MP’s proposed modernisation of the standards by which rented properties are judged as ‘fit for human habitation’. It is vital that Local Authorities are on top of such changes as they come in, and I look forward to welcoming more of them to NAPIT as corporate members.”

Nikki Pearson, Event Producer for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), said “Our 10th Annual Housing and Health Conference was one of best yet, with delegate places selling out quicker than ever. The exhibition which supported the conference was invaluable as it allowed our delegates an opportunity to talk with companies which they might not otherwise have easy access to, discussing how these companies can support and assist them in their roles/ departments. The support from sponsors and exhibitors is essential for the CIEH.”
