Children of UK Power Networks’ employees got stuck into the company’s summer school programme, during the holidays.
UK Power Networks welcomed nearly 60 young people to its annual Summer School, a hands-on, full-day experience designed to spark interest in the energy sector and give a taste of what a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) might look like.
Held at three workplaces across the regions where the company delivers power; Risby in Suffolk; Maidstone in Kent and London, the sessions brought together 58 13–17-year-olds whose parents or relatives work for the firm.
This year’s Summer School built on last year’s success, introduced new activities, and also gave attendees the chance to meet professionals working in the energy sector.
From team challenges to a lively hackathon on energy flexibility, students used creative thinking, technical problem-solving, and presentation skills. The programme was all about building confidence, encouraging curiosity, and having a bit of fun along the way.
The hackathon proved a hit, with creative ideas flying and teamwork in full swing.
The initiative is part of UK Power Networks’ ongoing commitment to supporting families, inspiring future talent, and showing that STEM careers are exciting and achievable.
Natasha Paramasamy, STEM outreach specialist, said: “This year’s Summer Schools have been nothing short of inspiring. It’s been a joy to see students grow in teamwork, problem-solving, and career ambition – all while having fun. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and grateful to everyone who helped light up the summer with learning.”
HR business partner, Jenny Morris, welcomed her two boys Caleb and Owen, to her world of work, where they both attended a workshop at the Risby Training Centre. The boys enjoyed a tour of the equipment that is used across the network and took part in group activities, where Owen won an gift voucher!
Jenny said: “I think it’s fantastic that the company is running these events and it’s even better to see how well they’ve been supported. It genuinely makes me proud to be part of a company that puts so much heart into giving back to the community and young people. Seeing all the good we do come to life like this is truly inspiring.”
