Europa, one of the UK’s leading distributors of electrical components and smart solutions, welcomed one of its key suppliers for a CPD-certified training session focused on surge protection.
Delivered in collaboration with global electrical protection experts Naomi Cuff and Mark Griffin from Mersen, the session provided in-depth insight into the importance, selection and installation of Mersen Surge-Trap® Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) in line with industry standards.
The training is part of Europa’s ongoing commitment to technical excellence and professional development across the electrical industry, and comes as the company continues to expand its product portfolio with multiple new additions in 2025.
Sonia Freed, Managing Director of Europa, said: “The training day gave us a valuable opportunity to bring together our internal team and partners to strengthen their knowledge of this important area.
“The content was insightful, practical and highly relevant to today’s electrical landscape – and it was fantastic to see such engagement from everyone who attended. Supporting education and upskilling across the industry is a key focus for us at Europa, and this event was a great example of what can be achieved through partnership.”
Surge protection devices help safeguard electrical installations from power surges or transient overvoltages – often caused by factors like lightning strikes or switching operations.
Mersen’s Surge-Trap range of DIN rail mounted SPDs is designed to offer high-performance protection across a wide variety of applications, from OEMs and panel builders to contractors and distributors.
Naomi Cuff, Mersen Sales Manager UK & Ireland, said: “Collaborating with our distribution partner Europa for this CPD-certified Surge Protection training is not just about sharing knowledge – it’s about reinforcing our technical alignment and commitment to raising industry standards.
“By equipping professionals with the tools to design safer, more resilient electrical systems, this session demonstrated how expertise and partnership can create real value across the supply chain, ultimately enabling customers to make safer, more confident choices.”
Mark Griffin, Mersen Regional Sales Engineer who led the session, added: “The training session presented an excellent opportunity to introduce not only our Surge Protection Devices (SPDs), but also the broader concept of surge protection.
“We covered what an SPD is, how it functions, the different characteristics and the relevant requirements and considerations outlined in the IEC standards, BS 7671, and our own guidance as an SPD manufacturer.
“This includes selecting the appropriate SPDs for a given installation to ensure optimal protection, as well as guidance on correct installation practices and coordination with suitable backup protection.
“It also allowed us to emphasise that Mersen’s expertise extends far beyond SPDs. As a global leader in electrical protection, we provide comprehensive solutions across fields such as fuses, bus bars, cooling technologies, and power management for demanding applications.
“Also, the Q&A session provided a valuable platform for attendees to raise their questions, often leading to an engaging open discussion.”
The training day took place at Europa’s Luton head office.
