From Brum to the Big Time: Birmingham Bricklayer Crowned UK Tradesperson of the Year at the 2025 On The Tools Awards
Posted by: electime 18th November 2025
Birmingham bricklayer Ash Mahoney has been named the UK’s Tradesperson of the Year, in an award sponsored by headline sponsor Jewson, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most respected and influential figures in construction.
Hosted in front of over 450 industry leaders, sponsors, and tradespeople, the On The Tools Awards, sponsored by Jewson, celebrate the very best of the UK’s trade community: honouring the skilled professionals who keep Britain building.
Each year, category winners from across the trades compete for the coveted Tradesperson of the Year Award, sponsored by Jewson, presented to the standout individual who demonstrates exceptional passion for their work, expertise in their craft, and contribution to the wider trade.
Ash, who also took home the Bricklayer of the Year award sponsored by CT1, was praised by judges for his all-round excellence: combining craftsmanship, communication, professionalism, and industry leadership. They commended his ability to “inspire pride and confidence across the trade.”
Ash didn’t expect his win, saying “shocked to be honest! It’s a nice feeling, thank you everyone – it means a lot.” He also encouraged others to get involved next year – “It’s always been a great night whenever I’ve been here [On The Tools Awards]. It’s a fantastic place to be.”
Sam Johnston, Marketing Operations Director – STARK Building Materials UK representing headline sponsor Jewson, said: “We’re incredibly proud to support the On The Tools Awards and to celebrate tradespeople like Ash who go above and beyond for their craft and community. His commitment to quality, his passion for bricklaying, and his dedication to promoting the trade perfectly reflect the values we stand for at Jewson. Ash is a true inspiration to others across the industry.”
A champion for bricklaying and the trade
Based in Birmingham, Ash runs Mahoney Brickworks Ltd, a family-run firm known for precision craftsmanship and community spirit. When he’s not on-site, Ash is busy elevating the image of the trade: sharing tips and site stories with his thousands of social media followers and presenting The Bricklaying Show on Fix Radio, where he champions issues facing today’s tradespeople.
His influence reaches far beyond the West Midlands, having represented the UK at the Spec Mix competition in Las Vegas. Whether online, on-air, or on-site, Ash is using his platform to inspire pride in the trade and encourage the next generation to pick up the trowel.
Lee Wilcox, CEO and Co-founder of On The Tools, said: “Ash represents everything the On The Tools Awards were created to celebrate: skill, passion, and community spirit in the truest sense. He’s not only an exceptional tradesperson, but a role model who uses his platform to uplift others, challenge stereotypes, and champion the next generation. At a time when the construction industry faces real challenges, it’s people like Ash who remind us why it’s worth fighting for. He’s a true ambassador for the trade and a brilliant example of the best of our industry.”
Congratulations to all the winners, highly commended, and finalists of the 2025 On The Tools Awards who represent the heart and soul of the UK’s construction industry.
