As the built environment looks to reduce its environmental impact, the conversation around sustainable lighting is moving beyond energy efficiency alone. How products are designed, the materials they use, how easily they can be maintained and upgraded, and what happens at the end of their service life are all becoming increasingly important considerations.

For LEDVANCE, this means looking at the complete lifecycle of lighting – from product design and manufacture through to installation, operation, maintenance and eventual replacement. The recent publication of the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report highlights the progress being made in embedding these considerations across its product portfolio, operations and wider value chain.

At the heart of this approach is a move away from the traditional linear ‘take, make, dispose’ model towards greater circularity – from line to loop.

For those specifying, installing and maintaining lighting, however, sustainability also needs to work in practice. Products need to remain reliable, straightforward to install and maintain, and suitable for the demands of the application. The challenge for manufacturers is therefore to deliver environmental benefits without compromising performance or practicality.

Designing for a longer life

Extending the useful life of lighting products is one way of reducing their wider environmental impact. Longer product lifetimes can reduce the frequency of complete luminaire replacement, helping to minimise material consumption and waste while potentially reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.

LEDVANCE’s EVERLOOP range has been developed with this principle in mind. EVERLOOP luminaires feature replaceable LED light sources and drivers, allowing these key components to be replaced or upgraded without having to remove and replace the complete luminaire.

For installers and facilities teams, this approach can simplify future maintenance and help extend the service life of an installation. From a sustainability perspective, it also means retaining more of the existing product and replacing only the components that require it, helping to conserve resources and reduce unnecessary waste.

Beyond the product

Product design is only one part of the picture. LEDVANCE’s wider sustainability strategy also encompasses its own operations, supply chain and investment in renewable energy.

Its recently published 2025 Sustainability Report details progress across environmental, social and governance measures. In October 2025, LEDVANCE achieved an EcoVadis Gold rating for the first time, placing the company among the top 5% of businesses assessed by EcoVadis globally.

Nelo Neves, Managing Director at LEDVANCE, said, “Sustainability is increasingly becoming a fundamental consideration in every lighting decision – from the products installers choose to the way buildings are operated. Our approach is to apply these principles in practical ways that can deliver benefits for installers and end users, as well as the environment”
