Mechanical and electrical services contractor J S Wright has given an added boost to the housing industry after expanding into offsite construction.

J S Wright has invested in a new production facility and appointed a prefabrications manager to meet increasing client pressure to build quickly and to the highest standards.

J S Wright’s new prefabrications unit, housed in a warehouse in Birmingham, will produce fully loaded heat interface unit (HIU) backboards and other modular units in the future for London and UK-wide apartment schemes.

The company will be able to reduce work time on site with fewer trades required by shipping consistently high quality HIU assemblies direct from the unit for installation within individual apartments where they will deliver carbon-saving heating and domestic hot water from central plant rooms.

Roy Stevens, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the building services industry and lives in Solihull, has been appointed to lead the unit as J S Wright’s first prefabrications manager.

Having worked in building services, facilities management and in production assembly for the past 12 years, he will manage site contract requirements and plan the development of other prefabrication models.

Roy was previously the building services manager for a financial institute where he was responsible for overhauling and updating its Midland headquarters and other UK-wide offices, and before that UK facilities manager for electronics giant Fujitsu Telecommunications where his role included contract management and managing building acquisitions and disposals.

He has a degree in Business Studies from Birmingham Polytechnic and a teaching certificate in Education from South Birmingham College, and was a BSI certified auditor. He also holds HNC certificates in mechanical, telecommunications and electronic engineering, and qualifications in production planning, fleet management and health and safety.

Roy said: “Our prefabrications unit will ensure that we continue to provide top-quality installations but with fewer trades required on site and fewer man-hours required to complete projects. We are already assembling and pre-testing HIU boards under clean dust-free conditions to meet demand over the next six months.”

Marcus Aniol, Managing Director of J S Wright, added: “Roy’s experience will prove invaluable in managing a unit that adds an exciting new dimension to our capacity to deliver mechanical and electrical services to the highest building and environmental standards for leading developers of multi-occupancy schemes.”

The company was voted one of the UK’s Top Ten Specialist Contractors to Work For in the 2016 Construction Enquirer Awards and was a finalist in three categories in this year’s H&V News Awards.
