Portable electrical test equipment expert, Megger, is delighted to congratulate Jane Thorp from Suffolk New College, who has been named the winner of the first-ever Female Skills Competition organised by SPARKS magazine, along with Jade Norris from Bath College, who was named as runner-up. Megger, who sponsored the competition along with other leading organisations in the electrical sector, also applauds the efforts of all of the other entrants, which, the judges report, were of a uniformly high standard.

Level 2 and 3 students of all ages could compete in live practical tests for a chance to win a place in the competition’s final. The top three from each of the two regional heats went through to compete in the Grand Final, which was held, along with the presentation ceremony, at Loughborough College.

“SPARKS organised this competition with the goals of getting the best people into our industry and helping them to progress, regardless of gender,” said Peter Wade, UK LVI Sales Team Leader of Megger. “We wholeheartedly support these goals, and we’re delighted to be able to support the competition with our sponsorship. We’re also gratified by the exceptional levels of skill and enthusiasm shown by the worthy winner, runner-up, and all the entrants. Their performance bodes well for the future of our industry!”

SPARKS launched its competition exclusively for female electrical learners after the revelation that, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), just 1 per cent of construction industry workers are female, representing an increase of only 0.7 per cent over the last decade. By focusing exclusively on female learners, it is hoped that the competition will provide valuable impetus toward achieving an equal balance of genders in the electrical sector.
