New British Standard Institute Recommendations for Home Battery Installation

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has recently issued new recommendations which impact the location of home battery installations. PAS 63100: 2024, published in March 2024, states that solar batteries shall not be installed in ‘voids, roof spaces, or lofts’.
The details outlined in PAS 63100: 2024 are recommendations, rather than regulations or legislation. Acting as a best practice guide, the recommendations are intended to aid local authorities and housing associations to create a specification which works for their installer partners. This recommendation acts as a fast-track standardisation document that defines good practice standards for a product, service or process.
Key takeaways from the recommendations include the advice that solar batteries can still be installed in lofts if, in accordance with official regulations, certain considerations are met. These include having a fire alarm, smoke alarm, adequate lighting, and accessible entry points to ensure safety in the occurrence of a battery fire. As the recommendations came into effect in March 2024, solar batteries installed in lofts before this date are not affected.
Terry Hayward, Director of Solar Select, shares his expert advice on how this update will impact the industry and customers. “We understand that our customers will be concerned about these new recommendations and future battery installations.
