Conceived to support the increase in demand for smart meter engineers that will arise from the upcoming national smart meter roll-out, COSAC will have the capacity to offer training and assessment to up to 48 trainee smart meter engineers at any one time, at its state of the art facility in Runcorn.
In line with a new nationwide campaign to upgrade energy supplies, tackle climate change and update an ageing energy system, the UK government has set itself the target of ensuring all UK homes have a smart meter installed by 2020.
It’s hoped that the smart meter roll-out will give people more control over their energy use whilst helping them understand their bills and energy consumption.
Andy Mason, managing director of COSAC, said: “There’s no doubt that achieving the government’s ambitious target is a mammoth task. With over 50 million gas and electricity meters in need of changing in less than three years, the demand for smart meter engineers has never been more acute. As a result, there’s no doubt that energy suppliers across the UK will be feeling the strain of battling a race against time to upskill their engineers to qualified smart meter engineers, but we’re here to help ease the burden.
“At COSAC, we’ve built a strong team of highly skilled expert trainers with over 70 years’ combined experience in the industry and coupled with our specialist in class smart meter installation programmes, we’ve created a truly brilliant training experience. We’re really looking forward to training up many talented smart meter engineers over the coming years and helping the whole nation get energy smart.”
With approximately 200 engineers hoped to be trained and upskilled at the facility through the twelve-week smart meter installation training courses in the first year alone, the centre could be the key to helping energy suppliers across the UK get smart meter ready in time for the roll-out.
In addition to smart meter training, COSAC also offers a range of one to five day classroom programmes and online self-study courses for the construction, retail and utilities industries.
