Power workers collect tins, tea bags and treats for Christmas food banks

Caring power workers are aiming to make Christmas a little better for their local communities struggling during the cost of living crisis by gathering tins, tea bags and treats for food banks.

UK Power Networks employees are generously collecting donations for the Trussell Trust food banks and already the tins and packets are flooding in.

The organisation distributes electricity throughout London, the East and South East and has offices in a number of places in all three regions. So far 23 teams have responded and are busy getting their colleagues to donate food. They work in departments based across London, Kent, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire.

Two teams based in Bury St Edmunds have been busy gathering food donations from colleagues.

Finance manager Tara Brewer said: “People are really struggling at the moment and we all wanted to help in some way.”

Alena Kozuskanicova, who works in Network Planning in Bury St Edmunds, said: “My team really wanted to help in some way and donating food is something they can do to help others in the community.”

Samantha Stapley, chief operating officer at the Trussell Trust, said: “Thank you to UK Power Networks, and their staff, for their support. As the cost of living crisis continues, more people than ever are likely to need a food bank’s help this winter.

“Food bank volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure help continues to be available. But ultimately, no one in the UK should need a food bank – all of us should have enough money for the essentials. The support of UK Power Networks and their staff will help food banks within our network continue to provide the lifeline of emergency support for local people in crisis, while we work in the long term to build a hunger free future. Thank you so much.”.

All the groups will take their food collections to a local food bank before Christmas.
