REL commits to training next generation of overhead line workers

Electrification specialist REL, a subsidiary of QTS Group, has successfully delivered a new talent development pilot for overhead line workers.
The training programme has been designed to upskill the next generation of overhead line equipment construction (OLEC) linesmen and support the long-term future of the sector.
It forms part of REL’s plans to tackle the rail industry skills shortage head on, with recent data from the National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR) projecting that 12,000 additional workers will be required annually to fulfil demand for services.
Despite the role being incredibly technical, REL opened the programme up to people from all walks of life, recognising the importance of recruiting individuals who align with its company values.
The pilot initiative attracted a diverse range of applicants from across the UK. The cohort includes a former veteran and a factory worker and covers an age range spanning 18 to 43.
The individuals undertook an intensive six-week training programme, combining the full OLEC 2 curriculum with additional qualifications and competencies, including IPAF certification, OTP plant operator training and advanced construction techniques.
All candidates successfully completed the programme and were offered roles as Trainee OLEC 2 Linesmen. Many progressed into live project environments, gaining valuable hands-on experience supported by industry-based mentorship.
Four participants have since secured permanent contracts within REL, making the programme a strong success for the trainees and the business.
