Former SELECT Managing Director Alan Wilson has been presented with the trade body’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of more than 40 years of service to the Scottish construction industry.

The award, sponsored by Schneider Electric, was presented to the industry veteran by association President Darren Crockett at the 2026 SELECT President’s Lunch at The Balmoral in Edinburgh on Friday 25 September.

Alan retired in August after 12 years with SELECT, including seven as Managing Director, having played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation and strengthening its position as Scotland’s largest construction trade association.

Presenting the award at the lunch, sponsored by Luceco Group, Mr Crockett paid tribute to Alan’s longstanding commitment to the sector and his leadership during some of the industry’s most challenging periods.

He said: “Alan has been a tireless advocate for our industry throughout an exceptional career spanning more than 40 years. His knowledge, integrity and leadership have earned him enormous respect not only across Scotland but throughout the wider construction sector.

“His contribution during the COVID pandemic was particularly significant. At a time of unprecedented uncertainty, Alan brought organisations together to establish the Construction Industry Coronavirus (CICV) Forum, creating a single voice for the industry and ensuring contractors’ concerns were heard at the highest levels of government.

“Throughout his time at SELECT, Alan has helped drive significant progress for the association, introducing new initiatives, strengthening membership and championing apprenticeships to help secure the future of the profession. His leadership has left SELECT in an exceptionally strong position and he is a thoroughly deserving recipient of this award.”

Accepting the accolade, Mr Wilson said: “I am genuinely honoured and humbled to receive this award. While my name may be on the trophy, it really reflects the support, commitment and hard work of the many colleagues, members, presidents and industry partners I have had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career.

“The construction industry has given me tremendous opportunities and I have always believed in the importance of standing up for contractors, improving standards and ensuring our industry has a strong and respected voice. Seeing the sector come together during difficult times and continue to innovate and adapt has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

“I leave SELECT enormously proud of what has been achieved over the past 12 years. The association is in a strong position, with an outstanding team, a committed membership and a clear vision for the future. I am confident its best days are still ahead.”

Holding a Master’s degree in Construction Law, Mr Wilson has spent more than four decades championing the interests of contractors through a career spanning trade associations, the private sector and public sector organisations. He is widely recognised as a leading advocate for fair payment practices, improved regulation and greater recognition of the electrical industry’s contribution to the Scottish economy.

Sharon Miller, who succeeded Alan as Managing Director, said his influence on both SELECT and the wider construction sector would be felt for many years to come.

She said: “Alan’s contribution to SELECT has been immense. His leadership, strategic vision and unwavering commitment to members have helped transform the association and strengthen its reputation across government, industry and beyond.

“He has always been passionate about supporting electrical contractors and ensuring they have a strong voice on the issues that matter most. Whether championing apprenticeships, improving industry standards or advocating for fairer business practices, Alan consistently put the interests of members at the heart of everything he did.

“On behalf of everyone at SELECT, I would like to congratulate Alan on this thoroughly deserved recognition and thank him for the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. We wish him a long, happy and well-earned retirement.”
