A recent study of more than a thousand people found that 25 per cent had difficulty finding a roofer. Builders and bathroom fitters were not far behind, with reports that it was difficult to find one when needed.
In contrast, mechanics were the easiest to get hold of, with 97 per cent of people admitting it was easy to do so. 88 per cent of people found electricians easy to find also.
Which? Trusted Traders, who conducted the research, makes it easier to find good, reliable tradespeople in your local area.
Tips to find the right fit for you area include asking neighbours for recommendations, as your properties are likely to be similar. Also, take advantage of social media to ask for a suggestion that is local.
Be sure to read reviews before hiring a tradesperson. You can also check if they’re a member of the relevant trade body (e.g. if a roofer is a member of The National Federation of Roofing Contractors).
Before making your choice, get quotes from at least three different tradespeople for the same job to make sure you’re getting value for money.
All tradespeople on the Which? Trusted Traders scheme have been vetted by trading standards qualified assessors, so be sure to visit their site for the best outcome.
Raj Kakar-Clayton, Managing Director of Which? Trusted Traders, said: “Consumers shouldn’t have to struggle when trying to track down a local, reliable tradesperson. When looking to hire a trader, work with someone who has an excellent reputation and who has been vetted by an independent endorsement scheme.”
