Investing in employee training and development have led to UK Power Networks winning the top accolade at this year’s Investors in People Awards.

The ceremony in London’s Old Billingsgate last night (November 13) saw the electricity firm bag the top award for Employer of the Year (Platinum >250 employees) – jointly with the Chartered Management Institute.

The company had also been shortlisted for social responsibility, best apprenticeship programme, employee engagement, and health and wellbeing. It was a bumper week for the electricity firm which also won several other awards – including coming second in the UK’s Top 10 Best Big Companies to Work For list.

UK Power Networks has maintained Platinum accreditation from Investors in People since 2020, in the top five per cent of companies to be work for in the world. This year it has hired 53 apprentices to help keep the lights on, and invested £6million in staff training. It is the first and only Distribution Network Operator to partner with the Purpose Coalition to set social mobility goals and offer access and opportunity to underrepresented groups.

Director of HR Andrew Pace said: “Our journey to Platinum is one that we are immensely proud of, and these awards are a way to recognise those committed teams that come to work every day to make life better for our employees. We place great emphasis on recognition, not simply financial, and the awards are an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the incredible work carried out by our amazing employees.

“Being part of the Investors in People community gives us an invaluable external benchmark beyond our office walls, and beyond the energy sector, to reveal just how well we are performing for our employees.”

The company, which delivers power to 8.5 million homes and businesses across the East of England, London, and the South East, employs around 6,000 people. It has major offices in London, Crawley, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Maidstone, and Borehamwood.

Investors in People is an internationally-recognised standard that honours companies which prioritise their employees. It focuses on people management, employee development, engagement, and performance, highlighting positive work environments where everyone feels valued and supported.
