Women’s Month – Campaign Against Domestic Violence and Abuse
Posted by: electime 24th September 2025
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) is actively supporting and championing women in the electrical industry by raising awareness about domestic violence and abuse.
October’s wellbeing talk was presented by Lucy Wade, a Domestic Violence Consultant with extensive experience in the charity sector. Her powerful and informative talk covered a range of important topics, including defining domestic abuse, its impact, myth-busting, gaslighting, and signposting. You can watch the full talk on demand on our YouTube channel.
How To Spot Domestic Violence in the Workplace
Domestic abuse doesn’t end when an individual arrives at work. The effects can significantly impact a victim’s professional life. Key signs to watch for include:
Changes to Work Attendance: Victims may struggle to maintain regular hours due to physical injuries, emotional distress, or legal matters. Alternatively, they may overstay at work to avoid home issues.
Reduced Productivity: The mental strain of abuse can significantly affect concentration and productivity, resulting in a noticeable reduction in the quality, quantity, and performance of work.
Increased Presence of Partner or Relative: Some victims will be visited frequently at work by their partner, ex-partner or relative. If working from home, this could manifest in the constant presence of a partner or relative in meetings.
Behavioural Changes: Victims of domestic violence may suddenly conduct themselves in an out-of-character way, withdraw and become detached from other employees, be increasingly vague about their home life, or suddenly or frequently have their camera off in meetings.
How to Support Victims of Domestic Violence
Supporting survivors of domestic violence in the workplace involves creating a safe, compassionate environment where individuals feel empowered to seek help. You can help by doing the following:
Raise Awareness and Educate: Domestic violence awareness campaigns and training can help employees recognize the signs of abuse, reduce stigma, and foster open dialogue.
Provide Access to Resources: Ensure access to support such as counselling, legal aid, and crisis hotlines. Confidential resources can encourage victims to seek help.
Foster a Supportive Workplace Culture: A workplace that values empathy, respect, and understanding will make survivors feel more comfortable reaching out to colleagues.
Respect Privacy: If someone shares their experience, respect their confidentiality. Allow them to control how they wish to proceed with their situation. EIC’s Support for Domestic Violence Survivors
