Work on the first motorway battery storage installation powering electric vehicle charging has now been completed.

InstaVolt, the UK’s leading public ultra-rapid EV charging network, has installed innovative battery systems at Welcome Break Corley services in both directions of the M6.

The pioneering systems store electricity on site and distribute it directly to InstaVolt’s chargers. This reduces reliance on large grid connections, helps maintain consistent charging speeds during periods of high demand and provides greater resilience across the site.

As part of the upgrade, InstaVolt replaced existing chargers with state-of-the-art new 160kW ultra-rapid units. The northbound side features eight ultra-rapid chargers and a fully accessible bay, with the southbound featuring seven ultra-rapid chargers.

The Corley installation is the first step in a wider rollout of groundbreaking battery systems installations across the network.

Delvin Lane, CEO of InstaVolt, said: “Completing this fantastic battery installation on both sides of the motorway represents a significant leap forward for public EV charging in the UK.

“Corley is the first motorway services to support its ultra-rapid chargers with on-site battery storage, demonstrating how smart energy management can deliver reliable, scalable and sustainable charging as EV adoption continues to grow.”

John Diviney, CEO of Welcome Break, said: “At Welcome Break, we’re proud to be leading the way in transforming motorway services for the future. This development reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering a seamless and reliable EV charging experience for all drivers.”

The battery installation at Corley builds on InstaVolt’s experience deploying energy storage at its Winchester Superhub, which combines battery technology with on-site solar generation to support 44 ultra-rapid chargers.
