Matt Dougan
Account Manager – Osram Opto Semiconductors

Matt Dougan has over 10 years’ experience in commercial and technical roles working with industry leaders in optoelectronics and lighting, supporting customers and partners on a diverse range of products and projects.

Matt was looking for a way to develop his knowledge formally in lighting and understand more about the topic of lighting. Discovering the HNC/HND course run by the LIA in partnership with the University of South Wales Matt found a course that satisfied his thirst for knowledge in lighting and for developing his career.

In Matt’s own words “the HNC course enabled me to develop my skills and knowledge in several areas, it’s great to be able to draw on this and has already lead to many meaningful conversations with both my colleagues and customers’.

One of the benefits that Matt has found really useful and interesting is the mix of students on the course where they share their views and experiences based on their backgrounds and roles in lighting.

Matt says that the course itself offers a good balance depth and breadth of information in the different modules. He has learned a great deal about Standards and has really found the topic of Lighting Design interesting and stimulating.

He says that whilst the course can be challenging at times, he feels that you can make of it what you want – if you put the effort in you get a lot more out of it, and after all it is an HNC/HND!

Matt says that his achievements in the HNC have been recognised within Osram and opportunities have opened up as a result of him studying a formally recognised qualification in lighting. About to graduate in the HNC Matt is continuing on to the HND course and hopes to be able to continue his studies after completing the HND.

Matt has been recognised by the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers, through its Charitable Trust, and awarded in 2019 for the best individual student from the LIA HNC/HND in Lighting Design & Technology. HE was presented with the Award at the LIA Annual Lunch in May 2019.
