UK Power Networks was named the winner of the Outstanding In-House Training Initiative award at the Learning Excellence Awards in London for its craft apprenticeship programme.

The award recognises the company’s commitment to developing skills and creating an environment where apprentices can progress towards fulfilling long-term careers

UK Power Networks’ technical training schools in Kent and Suffolk are training 96 craft apprentices as electricity cable jointers, substation fitters and overhead linespeople to keep safe and reliable power supplies flowing to 8.5 million homes and businesses. Ninety staff support the industry newcomers across four specialist training schools, supported by mentors.

The company’s craft apprenticeship programme develops a workforce which is crucial to maintain reliable power supplies and enable the connection of more electric vehicles, heat pumps, and renewable energy as Britain progresses towards a Net Zero future.

Helen Warrilow, commercial director for the Learning Excellence Awards, said: “UK Power Networks’ entry stood out in the Outstanding In-house Training Initiative category. The judges were genuinely impressed by the quality and impact of their programme – a truly worthy win.”

Steven Read, trainee programmes manager at UK Power Networks, said: “It is an honour to receive this award, which reflects the dedication of our training team and apprentices, as well as strong company leadership and values.

“Our programme not only equips our teams with the skills needed for the future but also fosters a supportive environment where apprentices can thrive. We are committed to tailoring our training to meet the unique needs of each apprentice, ensuring their welfare is at the heart of our approach.”

The Learning Excellence Awards attracts international entries and recognises relevant, agile, innovative and effective initiatives, programmes, products and services.
